Directed by Tom Hooper and based on the 2000 novel of the same name by David Ebershoff, this romantic drama follows the life of Danish painter Lili Elbe, one of the first known recipients of sex reassignment surgery. Eddie Redmayne stars as Elbe and Alicia Vikander plays his partner, Gerda Wegener. The supporting cast includes Sebastian Koch, Ben Wishaw, and Amber Heard.

The film received Academy Award nominations for Eddie Redmayne for Best Actor, as well as Costume Design and Production Design. Alicia Vikander won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
